There are many different types of bass drum ranging from the kit bass drum to the largest of the orchestral and recording drums. They are all used in differing ways. The bass drum and marching drums primarily add a pulse and depth to the music, whilst the larger drums are used as great affect for moments of drama within the music. Much has been written about the different styles, makes, sizes and specifics of the bass drum, but ultimately the bass drum is a large shell, with a membrane stretched across the diameter and put under tension with varying uses of bolts, wedges and ropes.
