Percussion are most likely the most ancient instruments around. Different civilisations from about 6000 B.C. have been using them as the most primal form of expression, such as imitating the rhythm of the human heartbeat, as well as holding a relevant position within sacred and ceremonial celebrations in Africa.

They can be classified by different criteria, such as material, function within the orchestra etc.., and they can produce either a “pitched” or “unpitched” sound when struck or shaken.
