Mallets and beaters are used to beat drums and other percussion instruments, and they comprise a head connected to a thin shaft.

The head can be made of different materials, such as brass, rubber, nylon, acrylic or wood, depending on the sound you want to obtain; kelon, rubber, nylon or acrylic can also be used on wrapped mallets, which are mostly used on marimba and vibraphones, and instruments with softer keys.

As a general rule, softer mallets are used on an instrument's lower registers, while harder and thinner mallets are used on higher registers.

Mallets can be mixed and matched during performances, when multiple ranges of timbres are involved, in order to facilitate the switch between the different registers.
