Founded in 1623, the Zildjian company is the oldest family owned business in America. Started by Avedis Zildjian I (the first), an Armenian alchemist residing in the city of Constantinople after discovering an alloy of copper, tin and traces of silver with unique sound qualities. The sound and quality of the cymbals that he produced were so spectacular and powerful, that the Sultan granted him permission to make cymbals for the elite Janissary Band before leaving to start up his own business in 1623.

Since this time, the business has been passed down though 15 generations of the Zildjian family and relocated to America in 1929 when Avedis Zildjian III moved the factory to Quincy, MA and then to its current location in Norwell, MA. It was after moving to America that the Zildjian company started to really have an impact on the popular music world and the business grew exponentially during the rapid growth of the Swing-era. With the help of legendary drummers such as Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson and Jo Jones, Avedis created and named the cymbals that we know today including the ride, hi-hat, crash and splash cymbals. Armand Zildjian took over the business from his father Avedis III in 1977 and then on to Armand’s daughter, Craigie, in 1999. The business is currently run by Craigie and her sister Debbie, both of whom continue the tradition of running the oldest family owned business in America.

The Zildjian cymbal range is nothing short of impressive and accommodates all drummers and percussionists alike. From beginners to playing proffesionals, past and present, you’ll be hard pressed to find something that doesn’t suit your playing style, level and needs.
