Henryk Górecki

(1933 - 2010)
Born in 1933 Henryk Górecki made his reputation as a leader of the Polish avant-garde music scene in the late 1950s. From the 1970s Górecki's music employed monumental structures built from simple modal materials. Hos works were inspired by folk and religious influences and the emotional power and clarity of his music has attracted a wide public following. Probably one of his best known works is his Symphony No 3 - Symphony of Sorrowful Songs and amongst much-loved choral works include Totus Tuus (1987).  Górecki's music has been favoured by many distinguished choreographers  and his works are regularly performed by the world's leading orchestras and ensembles including the Kronos Quartet, London Sinfonietta, Schoenberg Ensemble and the soprano Dawn Upshaw.
