(1882 - 1971)
Igor Stravinsky is widely regarded as the most original and influential composer of the 20th century. He studied with Rimsky Korsakov in St Petersburg from 1905-1908. His early works were heard by Diaghilev who commissioned The Firebird for Ballets russes. Stravinsky had further collaborations with Diaghilev creating Petrushka and The Rite of Spring, a move which saw him move from nationalism towards vibrant modernism. The wartime period brought a radical experimental phase and the economic conditions prompted much smaller-scale theatrical ventures such as The Soldier's Tale. His composition of Pulcinella launched a neo-classical phase which dominated the 1920s-1940s. Some major works from this period included Oedipus Rex, Symphony of Psalms, and The Rake's Progress. At the outbreak of the Second World War Stravinsky moved to the USA, settling in California. There he composed the ballet Agon which proved to be a watershed for late serial works, including Requiem Canticles. Hallmarks of his style, in whatever period, are Russian the folk inflections, rhythmic energy and orchestral virtuosity. Stravinsky's ballet scores are among the most significant of the past century.
