Compositions
Nicholas Maw

(1935 - 2009)
Nicholas Maw was one of the leading post-war British composers of orchestral music and a pivotal figure in the neo-Romantic revival.  He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Lennox Berkeley and Paul Steinitz and in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and Max Deutsch. Maw's breakthrough work was Scenes and Arias in 1962 premiered at the BBC Proms. He received acclaim for the score's lyricism and expressivity which led to two operas, One Man Show in 1964 and the Glyndebourne commission The Rising of the Moon in 1967-1970. Nicholas Maw composed cycles of works including Life Studies in 1973 to 1976 for strings and Personae 1973 to 1986 for piano. His music combines Viennese opulence and extended tonality with French refinement and colour. Maw's primary influences are from the Romantic tradition and include Brahms, Bruckner and Strauss. From 1984 he divided his time between Britain and the USA and was resident in Washington DC. His scores included the full-evening concert work Odyssey 1973 to 1987, a Violin Concerto in 1993 for Joshua Bell and the opera Sophie's Choice in 2002.
