(b. 1944)
Peter Eötvös was born in Transylvania in 1944. In 1958 he was admitted to the composition class of Zoltán Kodály at the Music Academy in Budapest. Eötvös relocated to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1966 and consequently performed with the Stockhausen Ensemble between 1968 and 1976. In addition during this time he was also employed as a sound engineer in the West German Radio electronic studio in Cologne. In 1978 Eötvös was given the huge honour of conducting the IRCAM in Paris at the request of Pierre Boulez. Following this success, he was asked to take on the role of musical director of Ensemble Intercontemporain in the French capital with performances of Stockahusen’s opera “Donnerstag aus Licht” at the BBC Proms in 1980 and La Scala Milan the following year. Moving forward a few decades, Peter Eötvös is seen as amongst the most successful operatic composers of his generation.
