Ludwig 14" x 5" Hammered Bronze Snare Drum for Hire
The snare drum is a widely used unpitched percussion instrument. It is regularly used in orchestras, marching bands, concert bands and many other music groups. It is the central drum of the drum kit and the most prominent drum in most marching and stage bands. It is also the drum that is taught first to students of both orchestral and kit drumming.
The snare drum is almost always double-headed, with generally snares of metal wire but sometimes gut or another synthetic material stretched across one or both heads. In all but a few applications, a single set of snares is applied to the non batter head (bottom, unplayed). Orchestral and drum kit players use thin, specialist heads, far too light to be played directly, for the non batter head. Pipe band snare drums have a second set of snares on the bottom (inside) of the batter head as well as a set on the non batter head.
Many modern snare drums have an adjustable snare strainer which allows the snares to be released completely, creating an effect similar to a tom-tom drum. There are many different snare drum types such as piccolo snares, that have a smaller depth for a higher pitch and deeper rope tuned snare drums.
