Jingling Johnny for Hire

Originating in the middle ages in Eastern Europe, the Turkish crescent is an intricately designed pole incorporating a headpiece with several rows of bells that is regularly found at the head of a march or parade. Berlioz is one of a small number of composers that have written for this instrument, but more recently there is a good visual example of a Turkish crescent in the film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".
