Description

Pedal Glockenspiel for Hire

One of the best known and simplest of orchestral percussion instruments, the glockenspiel is a run of steel bars, tuned and laid out in a keyboard style. Its origins and earliest uses are unclear. The range of a standard orchestral instrument are 2.5 octaves F to C, although 3 octave models that encompass a pedal and damper bar do now exist. Boulez wrote specifically for instruments such as this, as his writing is very fast and hard and without a pedal, would be impossible to perform. Steel is generally the construction material for the notes although various alloys have been tried with differing effects. The sticks used also vary widely; some have brass balls as heads, others are hard rubber, pyralene or plastic.
