This is used specifically by the composer Kurtag although other composers have used similar devices since. This is played simply by hitting the log (which should be at least 10" thick) with the axe. The sound produced is a fair representation of the cut of a tree but the choice of workbench is important to reduce creaking. Black & Decker has been found to be the best and the choice of the professional.
