Timbales are a shallow pair of single headed drums with a metal shell originating from south America or specifically Cuba. They are shallower but have a bigger diameter than single headed tom toms and are generally much higher tuned. The are played using a variety of stick strokes, rim shots, and rolls on the skins to produce a wide range of percussive expression and the shells usually form part of the technique of playing timbales. A cowbell usually forms part of the timbale set.
