Description

Talking Drum for Hire
The talking drum is a double headed hour-glass shaped drum that has a number of strings attached from one head to the other and running the length of the drum. When the drum is played and the strings are squeezed together under one arm, the pitch of the drum rises creating a unique sound. Also called an hour-glass or squeeze drum for obvious reasons, its origins lie in Africa. The talking drum is played with a distinctive hook-shaped stick. Without this shape of stick, the talking drum would be almost impossible to play. The act of squeezing the drum together makes the drum 'talk'. The UK's best-known percussion ensemble, Ensemble Bash uses several talking drums in their brilliant piece, ' Attack of the Dondos'.
