40" Remo Taiko for Hire

Remo’s Taiko are inspired by the long-honored Japanese drumming heritage. They carefully follow authentic Japanese designs from the barrel-shaped Nagado Daiko to the contoured Shime Daiko. This Drum is the perfect examples of tradition inspiring innovation. An Acousticon™ shell, durable TUFF-E-NUFF® finish. The large and small tunable Nagado are the first of their kind. They feature a heavy duty tuning system, steel counterhoops, and replaceable drumheads. Pitch flexibility combined with heads that can be changed in minutes instead of days make the tunable drums both practical and inspiring.

Taiko means "drum" in Japanese - etymologically "great" or "wide drum". Outside Japan, the word is often used to refer to any of the various Japanese drums, "wa-daiko", "Japanese drum", in Japanese and to the relatively recent art-form of ensemble taiko drumming. The performances can last between 5 and 25 minutes and typically follow a jo-ha-kyū structure, which means the performance will speed up significantly towards the grand finale.

There are many different types of bass drum ranging from the kit bass drum to the largest of the orchestral and recording drums. They are all used in differing ways. The bass drum and marching drums primarily add a pulse and depth to the music, whilst the larger drums are used as great affect for moments of drama within the music. Much has been written about the different styles, makes, sizes and specifics of the bass drum, but ultimately the bass drum is a large shell, with a membrane stretched across the diameter and put under tension with varying uses of bolts, wedges and ropes.
Like Chinese drums, construction, size and shape vary, but in general the shells are either zelkova or Japanese Oak and the heads are fastened to the shells but the use of multiple tacks. One of the above, the Uchiwa-daiko is dramatically different and is known as a Japanese fan drum. This looks like a small tennis racket without strings and has an impressive note from the head strung around the hoop.
