Kalimba for Hire
Originating in Africa, this is a wooden box with a sound board that has a number of metal tongues attached to the bridge. The length of the tongues determines the pitch of the note and on the most modern instruments, these are adjustable. The player presses the metal tongues and on release, these vibrate freely creating the distinctive sound. The Kalimba, otherwise known as the thumb piano, is the smallest of the variations that are available. Three other instruments in the same family are the Sansa and Marimbula and Kalimbaphone. The Sansa is a variation of the Kalimba, the Marimbula is a squarer and larger instrument and the Kalimbaphone is a very large version of the thumb piano.
