Traditional Japanese woodblocks are made of a hardwood of greater density than their modern cousins. They are usually round in shape but there are now modern representations of the original that use rosewood and are rectangular. Size for size these specialist wood blocks are much higher in pitch that their western cousins. These have proved extremely popular within the contemporary repertoire.
