Modern vibraphones have variable speed motors and some of the latest models even allow the player to stop the fans in a particular place, i.e. blocking the resonator with the fan or keeping the tube open. Older vibraphones had a limited range of around 2.5 octaves but the standard model is now 3 octaves F to F. Bergerault and Yamaha are unique in the fact they are the only percussion manufacturer that makes a 4 octave version. This model is becoming very popular within 20th Century percussion writing as the instrument descends down to a bottom C.
