There are several uses for rice on percussion instruments. This particular effect using a cup requests the user to pour the rice from the cup onto a cymbal. This has the effect of delicate raindrops on a metal surface. It is important not to use frozen rice as the effect can quickly become soggy. A broom is also supplied.
